I was messing around in Inkscape while listening to thunder and I had a sudden inspiration to make something noir. This was the result. The rain effect looks awesome when the particles are all animating, but obviously that’s lost in a still image. I don’t know what I want to do with this but it was fun to make and I really like the trenchcoat guy, although it’s hard to see detail from this far away.
I’m playing around with digital painting through MyPaint, and to help stop myself from being a perfectionist (he says as he retypes this sentence four times) I’m not allowed to undo any mistakes. I have to paint over them or just deal with it.
I don’t like this one as much as the one I did for Vex, and I think it’s largely to do with the fact that I don’t really have a color scheme in mind for Rigel. I wanted to make him very pale – almost albino – because it’s an uncommon choice for big, macho warrior characters, but the colors for his armor and gun were chosen arbitrarily.
I actually think my favorite part of this image is the ammo cartridge for the weapon. It’s a “shockgun” (get it? shotgun? shock….eh…), which shoots bursts of chain lightning. I’ve wanted to use the idea in a game for quite some time, and now I have a setting that makes sense to feature them.
Related: Every single piece of armor I’ve ever drawn has been super uninspired and boring.
I liked the earlier sketch so much that I decided to do it over in Inkscape. I’m really happy with the way this came out, particularly the roundness of his eyes, the way his ear indentation actually looks indented, and the paisley on his shirt.
